Food wastage is a significant issue in Nigeria, as it is globally, with approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food wasted each year. This staggering amount represents about 33 percent of all food produced worldwide. Despite this, around 795 million people suffer from hunger globally, and in Nigeria, an estimated 12 million people are in need of food—though this number may be much higher. Given these alarming statistics and the environmental consequences of food waste, it is crucial for everyone to take action to reduce food wastage in Nigeria.

Causes of Food Wastage

The primary factors contributing to food waste in Nigeria include:

  • Poor Storage and Transportation: Inadequate storage facilities and transport systems often lead to food spoilage before reaching consumers. Perishable items, in particular, suffer from these inefficiencies.
  • Excessive Cooking and Overbuying: Many individuals tend to cook more food than necessary or purchase excessive quantities, leading to leftovers that often go uneaten.

Addressing these issues is essential to combat the staggering 33 percent of food that is wasted.

Strategies to Stop Food Wastage in Nigeria

  1. Educate Farmers: Providing farmers with training and resources to preserve and store food effectively can significantly reduce waste during the harvest season. Improved storage techniques and facilities will help ensure that more food reaches the market without spoiling.
  2. Enhance Transportation: Investing in better transportation infrastructure will enable farmers to deliver their goods to markets while maintaining their quality. This will encourage more production and reduce losses.
  3. Plan Purchases: Consumers should assess their food needs and plan their purchases accordingly. By buying only what they need, individuals can save money and help ensure that food remains accessible and affordable for everyone.
  4. Promote Food Recycling and Reuse: Encouraging the practice of recycling and reusing food can make a significant difference. Instead of discarding leftovers, people can transform them into new meals, share them with others, or even use food scraps as compost for gardening. For example, fruit peels can be turned into juice or added to smoothies, and stale bread can be used in various recipes.
  5. Government Involvement: The government should invest in building storage facilities, such as silos, to allow for better preservation of food for future use. Such initiatives will help reduce wastage and ensure a more stable food supply.

Conclusion

Combatting food wastage in Nigeria requires a collective effort. It is vital to move beyond a “not in my backyard” mentality and recognize that food waste affects everyone, especially those who are hungry. By working together—farmers, consumers, and the government—we can make significant strides toward reducing food waste and ultimately alleviating hunger in Nigeria. Let’s join forces to create a more sustainable and responsible food system!
